Facebook gets unwelcome look at hackers' dark side

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.
The news didn't seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc.'s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday's extended trading.
The main building at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.
This time, at least, that material didn't get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn't say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.
It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn't identify the targets.
"As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future," Facebook wrote on the blog.
Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.
Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal - two of the three largest US newspapers - said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important.
Facebook didn't identify a suspected origin of its hacking incident, but provided a few details about how it apparently happened.
The security lapse was traced to a handful of employees who visited a mobile software developer's website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the workers' laptops. The PCs were infected even though they were supposed to be protected by the latest anti-virus software and were equipped with other up-to-date protection.
Facebook linked part of the problem to a security hole in the Java software that triggered a safety alert from the US Department of Homeland Security last month. The government agency advised computer users to disable Java on their machines because of a weakness that could be exploited by hackers.
Oracle Corp., the owner of Java, has since issued a security patch that it says has fixed the problem. In its post, Facebook said it received the Java fix two weeks ago.
Facebook never mentioned the word "hack" in describing the breach. That, no doubt, was by design because hacking is a good thing in Zuckerberg's vernacular.
To most people, hacking conjures images of malevolent behaviour by intruders listening to private voicemails and villains crippling websites or breaking into email accounts.
Zuckerberg provided his interpretation of the word in a manifesto titled "The Hacker Way" that he included in the documents that the company filed for its initial public offering of stock last year.
"The word `hacker' has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers," Zuckerberg wrote. "In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done."
Review: Murder 3 has some badly-acted thrills
The prototype follows a brooding man with a fringe, stubble, libido and secret, a vacuous hot woman who speaks in dubbed whispers, a serviceable Pritam esque soundtrack, a mysterious looking cop aimed to provide unintentional comic relief, a sturdy bed as the venue of predominant action and a script that is seldom, correction, never original.
Despite this unfailing predictability, the Murder franchise, like Raaz and Jannat has proved increasingly providential for the Bhatts -- Mahesh, Mukesh and Emraan Hashmi .
While the first two were unacknowledged rip-offs of Hollywood’s Unfaithful and South Korea’s The Chaser, Murder 3 is gracious enough to buy the rights of Columbian thriller, La Cara Oculta.
Giving him company in a grand mansion, quite lavish even for a celebrity photographer (he’s switched from capturing bare wildlife to barely-clad models) is Sara Loren playing an opportunistic waitress with the heart (and brains) of a bird. With the Bhatts’ in-house face of lust Hashmi going the credible route through films like The Dirty Picture and Shanghai, Murder 3 banks on Randeep. Hooda blank expressions, unblinking stares, muffled dialogue delivery and a strange pixie haircut to pull through.

Story of Gaganam?

IT is a hijack-based script. The story takes place in 5 days. People of various backgrounds and characterizations board a flight and it gets hijacked. This story has various aspects to it -
1. Each passenger (one politician and one film hero among them) react to such a crisis situation in a different way.
2. The reactions of the family members, relatives, friends who sent them off and who are about to receive them at destination.
3. The Government reaction and the decisions it take. The deployment of the right people from air force and army to deal with the crisis.
4. How media sensationalises the issue without realising the human angle in it.
There is beautiful humor generated out of tense situation in the flight. Humor is going to be a major asset to the film along with the script.

Praveen Kumar looking a doubtful ??

India's World Cup preparations appear to have received a blow with pacer Praveen Kumar looking a doubtful starter for the forthcoming event as he hasn't fully recovered from the elbow injury sustained during the South African series last month.
With less than a fortnight to go for the cricket World Cup to get underway, it has been learnt that the anxious Cricket Board (BCCI) has also called discarded Kerala pacer S Sreesanth to the NCA as Praveen's possible replacement for the quadrennial event, beginning in Dhaka on February 19.
Sreesanth took a fitness test in the afternoon at NCA, a move which is seen as a precautionary measure by the BCCI.

Andrew Strauss praises Flower's Ashes input

Sydney: England's Ashes series winners have yet to reach their peak, victorious captain Andrew Strauss said after his team's thumping final Test victory over Australia on Friday.
England's emphatic innings and 83-run victory in the Sydney Test completed a 3-1 series rout of the sorry Australians for their third win in the past four Ashes series.
Strauss and coach Andy Flower were the masterminds behind England's powerful showing, which has raised hopes they will ultimately challenge to become the top team in world cricket.
England are currently ranked third in Test cricket behind India and South Africa, with Australia sliding to fifth after their sixth defeat in their past eight Tests.
Looking ahead to the next Ashes series in England in 2013, Strauss said: "It's impossible to look into your crystal ball and know what's going to come. "There are going to be injuries, other guys are going to put their hands up and want to be part of the team. The majority of the team are going to be hitting their peak time in the next couple of years and that's encouraging for us."
But Strauss is not prepared to stand still and bask in the achievement of England's first series triumph in Australia for 24 years. "We've always got to be thinking about how we can improve and get better and hopefully one or two guys will be sticking their hands up and saying 'I can add something to this team as well'," he said.
"Clearly it's a very good achievement to come out here and win. Equally clearly the captain's only as good as the team he's got. I think when I retire, I'll sit back and think that was one of the most special times of my career, definitely. While I'm captain of the England side, you're not doing your job if you're not looking ahead to what's coming ahead and trying to keep the guys improving and going forward."
Strauss was cautious not to be too bold and declare he will captain England against Australia in over two years' time. "I think the more you do the job, the more you learn. The more you learn, the more you develop your tactics, your thinking the way you interact with people," he said.
"Definitely experience accounts for a huge amount. I've been doing the job for a couple of years now, hopefully there's a couple left there as well."
England had some special performances in the series with Strauss's opening batting partner, Alastair Cook, named man of the series. Cook was the series topscorer with 766 at 127.66, second only to Wally Hammond's 905 in 1928-29 for most runs for England in a series in Australia.
James Anderson finished the series with 24 wickets, the most by any England bowler since Frank Tyson took 28 in 1954-5. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior took 23 catches in the series and smashed the fastest century for England since Ian Botham in 1981 with his hundred off 109 balls in Sydney.
"For me the most impressive thing is the number of runs we've scored consistently which has been a bit of a weakness for us in the past," Strauss said.
"In that sense I'm excited about what we can achieve in the future. The bowlers to be able to perform like that day in day out over five Test matches, is an exceptional effort. We've got some good depth and we're going to need it because the schedule is very tight and there are going to be injuries. It's when you most need people to stand deliver and you're always wondering at the back of your mind, are people going to do that? But you've seen the guys have all done that."

Ace director SS Rajamouli's upcoming film Maryada Ramanna's audio was released at a function held at Shilpa Kala Vedika.

Rafael Nadal insisted fighting spirit was the key to claiming his second Wimbledon title after he took just two hours and 12 minutes to overcome Tomas Berdych on Centre Court.
The irresistible Spaniard triumphed 6-3 7-5 6-4 and continued to make a mockery of the common convention the switch to grass from the clay-court season is the toughest transition of all.
Nadal said: "I expect to play my best on every point and fight for every point like it is the last one. I don't think if the match is going to be difficult. I just go on court and fight point by point."
He added: "If you want to play well on a surface and you are good player you find a way. To play well on grass at Wimbledon was always a dream for me and the most important thing is to have the belief that you can do it.
"It didn't happen since (Bjorn) Borg but now it has happened for the last three years. I know how important the grass court season is and that is why after winning at Roland Garros I go straight to practice at Queen's. Having the experience can help a lot."
Berdych had burst into the final on the back of wins over Roger Federer and incoming world number two Novak Djokovic but his honeymoon period lasted six games before Nadal pounced on a string of errors to take the first break. That effectively had the first set in the bag for Nadal although Berdych did show some fighting spirit in the opening game of the second set when he extended the Spaniard and just failed to take advantage of three break point opportunities.
Berdych said: "The biggest difference between us was when he got the chance he took it. He gave me chances in the second and third sets and I couldn't make the break. It just shows how strong he is."
Even at that early stage Berdych's failure to take advantage of a rare drop in Nadal's intensity cost him dear. Three successive errors later in the set handed Nadal his break and a two-set lead on a plate. Seemingly denied the classic final they craved, the fans rallied behind Berdych but Nadal kept his nerve and again rose to the occasion, taking advantage of his first match point on the Berdych serve at 5-4.
Nadal fell to the court then celebrated his triumph with a somersault and he admitted although his win was much more straightforward than his five-set epic over Federer two years ago, it was just as sweet.
Nadal added: " Every title is really special so it is difficult to say this title is more special than the other one. The other one was more dramatic and it is always special to win your first title. But it was not easy for me to come back and win here."
